Gelato 101 is one of my favorite new spots in Encinitas, CA!
It has multiple appeals. One is the high-quality ingredients they use in their handmade authentic gelato! It’s all organic and non-GMO. You never have to worry about what might be contained within your ice cream at this place. The flavor variety is fantastic, there are plenty of dairy-based flavors and vegan options. The vegan ones are super good, too (I love the pineapple and mojito, mmmm)!
As for the dairy flavors, pistachio is super good (a gelato classic). Stracciatella (chocolate chip) and mint chip are also great. They have some really rich super dark chocolate and espresso-based flavors, too. The staff told me their favorite of all time is the creme brulee—it’s has a creamy creme brulee flavor with chocolate pieces inside! I like that the flavors change daily because it adds an element of fun and discovery since when you go you don’t know what you’re going to find.
By the way, did you know that gelato is in a way healthier than regular ice cream?
Being made with a higher ratio of milk to cream (as opposed to ice cream), gelato typically has less fat and calories. The texture of gelato is a bit different from ice cream—it ends up denser because of the slow-churning method they use when making it. Gelato is rich and delicious!
Gelato 101 features coffee and boba drinks as well. I’ve had some great coffee there but I found the boba drinks to be just OK. Where it’s at at this place is really the gelato! Another big draw is the pleasant outdoor seating area. Day or night, it’s so enjoyable to just hang out and eat gelato in the “garden” space. It’s fun to watch beach passersby and feel the gentle ocean weather (the beach is just a couple blocks away). How good the gelato is here, and how special the atmosphere, explains why it’s become a popular spot for locals. It’s definitely not uncommon for there to be a line out the door with people waiting for gelato. Out of all the gelato I’ve tried in San Diego, I’d say Gelato 101 has the best!
